Renato Corti (1 March 1936 – 12 May 2020) was an Italian Roman Catholic prelate who served prominently as Bishop of Novara and later was raised to the College of Cardinals. His long ministry combined diocesan leadership with pastoral and spiritual interests. He was born in Galbiate in the Province of Lecco and died in Rho, Lombardy, at the age of 84.
Early life and priestly formation
Corti grew up in northern Italy and entered priestly formation in the mid-20th century. He was ordained to the priesthood and spent decades in parish and diocesan ministry before being named a bishop. Over the years he became known for attention to clergy formation, pastoral care and the spiritual formation of lay faithful, contributing to diocesan programs and reflections on pastoral practice.
Bishop of Novara (1990–2011)
In 1990 he was appointed Bishop of Novara, a diocese with a long Catholic tradition in the Piedmont–Lombardy area. During his episcopacy he oversaw parishes, seminarian education, and local pastoral initiatives, guiding the diocese through social and liturgical changes at the turn of the century. He retired from active governance in 2011 after more than two decades as ordinary.
Cardinalate and recognition
On 19 November 2016 Pope Francis named Corti a cardinal at a consistory, an honor that recognized his lifetime of service. Because he was already beyond the age limit for electors, his elevation was largely honorary, reflecting esteem for his pastoral witness rather than a role in future conclaves.
Contributions and reputation
Corti was regarded as a thoughtful pastor and commentator on spiritual life. He published pastoral reflections and made contributions to diocesan teaching and the formation of clergy. Colleagues and parishioners remembered him for a pastoral style that emphasized listening, spiritual accompaniment, and faith lived in community.
