Overview

Regensdorf is a suburban municipality in the canton of Zürich, Switzerland. It belongs to the Dielsdorf district and is the largest population centre in the Furttal valley. The municipality combines residential neighbourhoods, local commerce and public services and acts as a link between the city of Zürich and surrounding rural communities. Local administration and information are handled through the municipal authorities.

Geography and environment

Regensdorf lies in gently rolling terrain with a mix of built-up areas, agricultural land and small woodlands. A notable feature is Katzensee, a small lake with a public lido known as Strandbad Katzensee, situated on the border with the Affoltern quarter of the city of Zürich. The lake and its surrounding green spaces provide recreational opportunity, informal nature areas and habitat for local flora and fauna.

History

The settlement developed over many centuries from small villages and hamlets into a larger municipality as urbanisation intensified around Zürich. In the twentieth century Regensdorf experienced residential growth and diversification of local economic activities while retaining traces of its village origins in some neighbourhoods.

Outdoor recreation is centred on green corridors and the Katzensee bathing area, which is a popular destination in warmer months and lies close to the boundary with the Affoltern quarter (Affoltern) of the city of Zürich.
