Razavi Khorasan Province
Razavi Khorasan is a large northeastern province of Iran whose capital, Mashhad, is a major religious and cultural center. The region blends historical heritage, agriculture, industry and cross-border trade.
Overview
Razavi Khorasan (see Persian name) is one of the provinces in northeastern Iran. Formed when the old Khorasan was divided in 2004, it has Mashhad as its administrative and spiritual center. Mashhad is home to the shrine of Imam Reza and attracts millions of pilgrims and visitors each year (Mashhad).

The province occupies a varied landscape of mountains, plateaus and desert margins. It borders neighboring countries to the north and east, and adjoins other Iranian provinces to the west and south. Elevation and continental location create a generally semi-arid climate with cold winters in highlands and hot summers in lowlands. Water resources and irrigation shape agricultural patterns across the province.
History and cultural heritage
Razavi Khorasan lies within the historic region known as Greater Khorasan, an important corridor on medieval trade routes such as the Silk Road. Several historically significant cities and sites—like Nishapur and the ancient town of Tus—preserve monuments, mausoleums and literary associations. The area is linked with eminent figures in Persian literature and science and has a layered cultural legacy from pre-Islamic and Islamic eras.
Economy and main activities
The provincial economy mixes pilgrimage-driven services, agriculture, mining and manufacturing. Notable agricultural products include saffron and barberries, while traditional crafts such as carpet weaving remain important. Industrial centers around major cities support food processing, textiles and light manufacturing. Cross-border trade and transit are significant for local commerce.
Administration and major cities
- Mashhad — provincial capital and principal city, religious and economic hub.
- Nishapur (Neyshabur) — historic city with archaeological and literary links.
- Sabzevar, Quchan, Torbat-e Heydarieh and Kashmar — regional centers with agricultural and industrial roles.
Significance and visiting
The shrine of Imam Reza is the province's focal point for pilgrims, cultural tourism and religious education, and it supports a network of museums, seminaries and services. Visitors also come for historical sites, local markets and natural landscapes. For administrative context and a list of provinces in Iran see the province list. Further information on Mashhad and regional attractions can be found via local resources (Mashhad).
