Pinball is a coin-operated arcade game in which one or more metal spheres are propelled across a sloped playfield inside a cabinet. Pinball traces its lineage to 18th-century tabletop games and bagatelle; it evolved into coin-operated machines in the early 20th century. During much of the mid-20th century pinball was banned in many U.S. cities because it was viewed as a game of chance and associated with gambling.
