Piet Kee — Dutch Organist, Teacher and Composer (1927–2018)

Career and positions

Kee held several major posts during his professional life. From 1952 to 1987 he served as organist of the Hagerbeer–Schnitger organ in St. Laurens church in Alkmaar, and from 1956 until 1989 he was city organist at the renowned Müller organ in St. Bavo church in Haarlem. He also maintained an active concert schedule at home and abroad and took part in organ festivals and masterclasses.

Teaching and influence

As a pedagogue, Kee taught at the Music Lyceum and the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam from 1954 until 1988, training many students who went on to professional careers. He was closely involved with the Haarlem International Summer Academy for Organists, where he taught, examined and helped shape the curriculum for aspiring organists. His teaching emphasized technique, registration, historical awareness and the art of improvisation.

Repertoire, recordings and composition

Kee's performing repertoire ranged from early music and Baroque works to Romantic and contemporary pieces. He was respected for his interpretations of J.S. Bach and other Baroque composers, and for presenting modern works and his own compositions in concert programs. Kee made numerous recordings and broadcast performances, contributing to the dissemination of organ literature and historic-instrument practice.
