Pierre Bec: Occitan poet, linguist, and advocate for regional language
Pierre Bec (1921–2014) was a French poet and linguist who specialized in the Occitan language, a founder and long-time leader of the Institut d'Estudis Occitans, and an important scholar of troubadour poetry and regional dialects.

Life and background
Bec was born in Paris but spent his childhood in the Comminges region, where he learned Occitan from local speech. During World War II he was deported to Germany from 1943 to 1945; after the war he resumed his studies in Paris and completed his formal education in 1959. He died in Poitiers on 30 June 2014 at the age of 92.
Importance and legacy
Bec's work bridged scholarship and cultural activism. As a medievalist he helped clarify the corpus of troubadour poetry for contemporary readers and researchers; as a linguist and teacher he contributed to standardizing and teaching modern Occitan forms. Through his leadership in the IEO and his publications he influenced subsequent generations of researchers, teachers, and writers interested in regional languages of southern France. His publications remain reference points for those studying Occitan philology, lyric tradition, and dialectology.
