Peter Heayne Joseph Sellers (born 1921 or 1922 – 22 April 2016) was a New Zealand sports broadcaster best known for his long career on radio and for presenting an early television sports programme. He was born in Wellington and educated at Rongotai College. Over several decades Sellers became recognised as one of New Zealand's steady and dependable voices for sport, reaching audiences on both radio and television.
Career and roles
Sellers began his broadcasting career with the national radio service in 1952, working in Wellington. He relocated to Dunedin in 1958 and continued as a leading regional and national commentator. His work was principally on radio, where live commentaries and programme presentation formed the core of his output. From the early 1960s until about 1975 he also presented a televised sports show, at a time when television sport was still developing in New Zealand. He retired from broadcasting in 1987 after a career spanning more than three decades.
Broadcasting style and influence
Sellers was widely regarded for a clear, measured delivery and an emphasis on accurate description and impartial coverage—qualities valued in sports radio when listeners relied on commentators to follow live events. As television expanded, he adapted to the visual medium while retaining the narrative skills that made him a reliable radio presence. His career overlapped with major developments in New Zealand sports media, and he played a part in shaping how local audiences experienced live sport.
Legacy and significance
While not a household name internationally, Sellers left a lasting imprint on New Zealand broadcasting circles. Colleagues and audiences remembered him for steady professionalism, a dedication to local sport, and a long service that helped bridge the early radio era and the arrival of televised sports. His move from the capital to Dunedin also highlights the role of regional centres in New Zealand's media landscape.
