Paulding County is a county in the U.S. state of Georgia located on the northwestern side of the Atlanta metropolitan region. Its county seat is Dallas. Once largely rural, Paulding has become a predominantly suburban and exurban county as the Atlanta area expanded, with a population that has grown from small nineteenth-century settlements to well over 100,000 residents in recent decades.

Geography and character

Paulding County occupies rolling hills and mixed forests typical of northwestern Georgia. Land use mixes residential subdivisions, commercial corridors, and remaining farmland. Many residents commute to jobs elsewhere in the Atlanta region while local neighborhoods and small towns serve as community centers.

History

Established in the early 1830s and named for Revolutionary War figure John Paulding, the county developed through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries around agriculture, small industry, and county government. Its growth accelerated in the late twentieth century as metropolitan expansion pushed beyond Atlanta’s core.

Government, economy and transport

The county government centers in Dallas and provides typical county services: courts, schools, public safety, and planning. The local economy includes retail, light manufacturing, services, and construction tied to suburban growth. Transportation is dominated by regional and state highways that provide commuter links to Atlanta and neighboring counties.
