Owen Garriott — American electrical engineer and astronaut

Early life and education

Born in Enid, Oklahoma, Garriott trained as an electrical engineer and worked in research, instrumentation and telemetry. That engineering background prepared him to design and operate scientific instruments in the confined and demanding environment of spacecraft, and to communicate complex experimental goals to both technical teams and the public.

Skylab and Spacelab flights

Garriott spent about 60 days aboard the United States' first orbital laboratory during the Skylab 3 mission. The mission emphasized biomedical studies of how the human body adapts to weightlessness, solar observations, and Earth resources photography. Ten years later he participated in Spacelab-1, a ten-day science-focused flight that demonstrated modular laboratory capabilities for the Shuttle era and broadened the range of experiments feasible in low Earth orbit.

Scientific contributions

During his missions Garriott operated a variety of scientific instruments, performed observations and supported investigations in life sciences, solar physics and materials studies. The hands-on experience of running experiments in microgravity helped refine procedures, hardware design and crew training that informed later long-duration programs and international station operations. He was also involved in efforts to make results accessible and engaging for students and the general public.

Public outreach and later career

Beyond his flight assignments Garriott took part in educational outreach and public communication about space science, helping to bring the experience of orbital research to wider audiences. After leaving active flight status he remained engaged in scientific and technical communities and supported initiatives that linked engineering with informal education.

Family and legacy

Garriott was the father of Robert and Richard Garriott. The Garriott family was involved in early computer-game entrepreneurship; the family's activities connected technology, entertainment and exploration. Garriott's life illustrated the intersection of engineering practice, crewed research in orbit and public engagement with science. He passed away in Huntsville, Alabama on April 15, 2019.
