Opacity is the degree to which a medium blocks passage of light or information. It applies to optics and materials (absorption, scattering), digital graphics (alpha/opacity), and metaphorical uses like organizational transparency.

Opacity commonly denotes the inability to see through a substance or to transmit light. In everyday language it contrasts with transparency and translucency: transparent materials transmit light with little alteration, translucent ones scatter it so objects appear blurred, and opaque materials prevent transmission so that no image is formed through them.

Causes and basic measures

In physical contexts opacity arises from three general processes: absorption (conversion of light to other energy forms), scattering (deflection of light by particles or irregularities), and surface reflection. The effectiveness of these processes depends on wavelength, thickness, composition, and internal structure. Scientists and engineers describe attenuation using wavelength-dependent coefficients and related concepts such as optical depth or optical density; in many cases the relation between transmitted intensity and thickness follows an exponential attenuation law.

Opacity in materials and optics

Materials are engineered for specific opacity properties. Metals are generally opaque because free electrons reflect and absorb visible light; glasses are transparent when pure but become opaque when doped, roughened, or made porous. Pigments and dyes give paints and inks their opacity by strongly absorbing or scattering light. In astronomy and astrophysics, opacity of stellar matter controls how radiation moves through a star and influences its temperature structure.

Opacity in computing and graphics

In digital imaging and user interfaces, opacity is a parameter that sets how much an element hides content beneath it. It is often represented by an alpha channel or a scalar value from fully transparent to fully opaque. Rendering systems combine opacity with blending modes to produce translucency, shadows, and composite images. Managing opacity is fundamental to compositing, anti-aliasing, and visual effects.

Other senses and importance

Beyond physical light, "opacity" is used metaphorically to describe lack of clarity in information, decision-making, or communication. Organizational or regulatory opacity means rules or actions are concealed or difficult to inspect. In linguistics and cognitive science the term can also refer to processes that obscure relationships between surface forms and underlying representations.
