Early life and partnership

Protopopov was born in Leningrad in the Russian SFSR. He met Ludmila Belousova as a fellow skater, and the two formed both a lifelong partnership on the ice and a marriage off it. Together they developed a repertoire of elements and partnered moves noted for clean lines, precise timing and an emphasis on gracefulness as well as technical control.

Competitive achievements

The Protopopovs dominated international pair skating in the mid-1960s. Their major titles include two Olympic championships (1964, 1968) and four World Championship victories (1965–1968). In 1979 Protopopov and Belousova left the Soviet Union and settled in Switzerland. They became Swiss citizens in 1995 and continued to skate in shows and exhibitions well into later life, performing into their seventies and serving as enduring ambassadors for their generation of skaters. Their decision to remain abroad during the Cold War era was widely reported at the time.
