Odawara, Kanagawa: coastal city and historic gateway

History

The town grew around a strategic castle site and developed into an important castle town and post station on the historic Tōkaidō route between Kyoto and Edo (modern Tokyo). Odawara Castle and the surrounding park reflect the city's feudal past; the castle was a stronghold of regional power during the Sengoku period and later became a focal point for civic restoration and local pride.

Attractions and culture

Visitors come for cultural sights, seasonal events and local food. Notable features include Odawara Castle and museum spaces, castle-park plum blossoms in spring, coastal promenades and fish markets offering fresh seafood. The area is also a common base for excursions to Hakone and nearby mountain attractions.
