Northern Mindanao, commonly called Region X, is an administrative region in the southern Philippines with its regional center in Cagayan de Oro. The region combines coastal provinces, an agricultural highland, and a small volcanic island province. It serves as an economic and transportation hub for northern parts of the island of Mindanao and contains a mix of cultural groups, languages and ecosystems.

Geography and provinces

Northern Mindanao encompasses diverse landscapes: the upland plateau of Bukidnon, coastal plains along Misamis Oriental and Misamis Occidental, the island of Camiguin, and the varied terrain of Lanao del Norte. The region includes five provinces; see the region's provinces for a formal list. Major urban centers include Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, and the area is served by Laguindingan Airport and several regional seaports.

  • Bukidnon — an inland province known for agriculture and rolling highlands; more information at Bukidnon.
  • Camiguin — a small volcanic island popular for hot springs, beaches and waterfalls.
  • Misamis Occidental — coastal province with fishing and farming communities.
  • Misamis Oriental — coastal and urbanized, home to Cagayan de Oro and regional commerce.
  • Lanao del Norte — situated near Lake Lanao and characterized by both lowland and upland areas.

History and culture

The region's precolonial history involved indigenous groups and maritime trade; later Spanish, American and Japanese periods shaped settlement patterns and infrastructure. Today Northern Mindanao is culturally plural: Cebuano is widely spoken, indigenous peoples such as the Higaonon and Bukidnon communities maintain distinct traditions, and there are significant Christian and Muslim populations with shared local festivals and markets.

Economy and transport

Economic activity includes agriculture (rice, corn, highland crops and plantation commodities), fishing, light industry and services. Cagayan de Oro functions as a commercial center and transport hub. For official region administration see the regional page and for national context consult Philippine sources. Infrastructure improvements over recent decades have strengthened road, sea and air links that support trade and tourism.

Attractions and environment

Natural attractions range from waterfalls and river canyons to volcanic landscapes and island beaches. Camiguin is noted for its volcanic features and tourist sites, while Bukidnon's highlands are known for scenic countryside and cooler climates. Conservation concerns include watershed protection, sustainable fisheries and balancing development with community livelihoods.

Visitors and researchers can explore a mix of urban services and rural traditions; the region's combination of geography, economy and culture makes it an important part of Mindanao's overall diversity.
