Overview

Norridge is a village in Cook County, United States. According to the 2010 U.S. census the village had 14,572 residents. It is a compact, primarily residential municipality in the northwest part of the county and is widely recognized for the Harlem Irving Plaza shopping center, commonly called Harlem Irving Plaza.

Characteristics

The built environment of Norridge is dominated by single‑family homes, small commercial corridors and neighborhood parks. Village government is organized in the typical Illinois village form, with an elected village president (mayor) and a board of trustees that oversee local services such as police, public works and zoning. Because of its size and setting, local planning emphasizes residential quality, property maintenance and small‑scale retail.

History and development

Originally part of agricultural land and suburban townships on the outskirts of Chicago, Norridge grew substantially during the mid‑20th century as the region suburbanized. The community incorporated to establish local control over services and development. Postwar housing construction and the expansion of commercial centers shaped the village into the close‑knit residential community it is today.

Economy and landmarks

Harlem Irving Plaza is the village's most prominent commercial landmark and draws shoppers from neighboring neighborhoods. In addition to this regional mall, Norridge supports small, locally owned businesses along its main streets. Its proximity to major transportation routes and to the O'Hare area makes it convenient for commuters and visitors.

Community and amenities

Residents use public parks, community programs and nearby schools to meet recreational and educational needs. The village maintains local parks for sports, playgrounds and seasonal events; many residents also make use of cultural and recreational offerings in adjacent Chicago neighborhoods. Civic life includes volunteer organizations, local events and municipal boards that engage community members in planning and services.
