Norman Dewis (3 August 1920 – 8 June 2019) was a British automotive test driver and development engineer whose career was closely linked to Jaguar's postwar rise. Born in Coventry, Warwickshire, he served as Jaguar's chief test driver and development engineer from 1952 until 1985. Over more than three decades he combined high-speed driving skills with engineering feedback to help refine production and competition cars.
Roles and responsibilities
As chief test driver Dewis's duties ranged from prototype evaluation to endurance and high-speed testing. He worked alongside designers and engineers to expose faults, improve handling, and validate performance under real-world conditions. His practical reports helped shape suspension tuning, braking behaviour, and drivetrain durability before models reached customers or the race track.
Contributions and methods
Dewis's approach blended driving technique with mechanical understanding. He was routinely asked to push vehicles to their limits to identify stress points and unexpected behaviours. In addition to development work he demonstrated cars at events and contributed to Jaguar's reputation for sporting performance. Later in life he continued to share technical insight as an ambassador for the marque.
Recognition and legacy
For his long service to the motor industry Dewis was appointed an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2015. Colleagues and historians credit him with a practical influence on vehicle safety and responsiveness during a formative period for British sports cars. He remained a well-known figure among enthusiasts until his death at age 98 on 8 June 2019.
