Nolan County is a rural county in the U.S. state of Texas. According to the 2010 census the county had a population of 15,216. The administrative center and largest city is Sweetwater, which serves as the county seat. Nolan County lies on the rolling plains of west-central Texas and combines open rangeland, irrigated cropland and energy infrastructure.

Geography and climate

The county landscape is typical of the southern High Plains and adjacent prairie: gently rolling terrain that supports both dryland and irrigated farming, ranching, and patches of native brush. Summers are hot and generally dry, while winters are mild to cool. Natural drainage and shallow streams feed local irrigation and ranching resources.

History

Nolan County was organized in the late 19th century and is named for Philip Nolan, associated with early exploration of the region. Settlement followed a pattern common to West Texas: initial ranching and farming, then mineral exploration and later energy development. Sweetwater grew as a local service center for surrounding farms and transport routes.

Economy and energy

Agriculture—cotton and livestock—has long been important. Oil and gas production contributed to local development in the 20th century, and in recent decades large-scale wind energy projects have been established in and around the Sweetwater area because of favorable winds and open land. Local businesses also support freight, trucking and services for a dispersed rural population.

Transport and infrastructure

Major east–west highways and rail lines cross or pass near the county, making Sweetwater a regional junction for road and rail movement. These connections help move agricultural products, energy materials and other freight to larger markets.

Government and communities

The county government, based in Sweetwater, provides courts, law enforcement, road maintenance and record keeping. The population lives in Sweetwater and in smaller towns and unincorporated settlements scattered across the county; many residents are engaged in farming, ranching, energy work or service occupations.

Culture and notable events

Sweetwater and Nolan County host local fairs, community gatherings and regional events that reflect agricultural and rural life. The county’s mix of historic sites, museums and community institutions documents settlement, ranching and energy eras. Visitors often use Sweetwater as a base for exploring the wider plains economy and heritage.
