History and development

Atlantic Hockey was formed in the early 2000s after a reorganization of northeastern collegiate hockey conferences. It succeeded an earlier arrangement of programs that had competed together under different conference banners. Membership has changed over time as institutions reassess athletic alignment; for example, the University of Connecticut announced a move to Hockey East for its men's program in the 2010s, reflecting shifting priorities and conference realignment in college hockey.

Competition and postseason

Conference play typically features a round-robin or paired schedule with points awarded for wins and ties. At the end of the regular season Atlantic Hockey holds a conference tournament; the tournament champion earns the conference's automatic entry to the NCAA tournament. Individual schools also compete for senior-year awards, scoring titles and all-conference recognition within Atlantic Hockey.

Atlantic Hockey is noted for providing a Division I platform to smaller institutions and service academies that balance strong academic missions with competitive athletics.
