Neerpelt is a locality in the northeastern part of Belgium that until 1 January 2019 functioned as an independent municipality. On that date Neerpelt and its neighbour Overpelt were administratively combined to create the new municipality of Pelt. Historically counted as a separate municipality, Neerpelt had a population of about 16,156 people in 2007 and sat at approximately 51°13′N, 5°26′E. Former municipality status means the name Neerpelt continues to be used for the town and its community even though local government is now organised under Pelt. Neerpelt vlag.svg

Geography and setting

Neerpelt lies in the Campine (Kempen) landscape of the Belgian Flemish-speaking region, within the province of Limburg (Limburg in Belgium, not to be confused with the Dutch province of the same name). The terrain around Neerpelt is a mix of small woodlands, agricultural fields and residential areas typical of the region. Its position in the north of Belgium places it relatively close to the Dutch border and to other regional centres, giving it ties for commuting and cross-border exchange. History and name

The place name Neerpelt reflects local topography and medieval naming conventions: the element "Neer-" commonly denotes a lower or downstream location relative to another settlement, here the wider Pelt area. Over centuries the town developed from rural hamlets into a modest local centre with shops, schools and services. Like many Belgian municipalities, its modern administrative boundaries and responsibilities evolved through 19th- and 20th-century reforms and through the municipal mergers of the 21st century.

Economy, culture and role

Neerpelt historically combined agriculture with light industry and a service sector that serves the surrounding villages. It has functioned as a local hub for education, culture and retail for nearby communities. The merger into Pelt aimed at streamlining municipal services and strengthening the area's capacity for planning and development. The town remains a point of local identity and community activity within the larger municipal framework.
