Collections and services

The library's holdings include rare manuscripts, early printed books, newspapers, maps, periodicals and modern publications. It provides public reading rooms, reference services, catalogues and interlibrary cooperation. In recent decades the institution has developed digital collections and online catalogues to broaden access for researchers and the general public.

Buildings and locations

Historically the library operated from a neoclassical building in central Athens, designed in the 19th century by Theophil von Hansen. In the 2010s many of its functions were transferred to a new, purpose-built facility within the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center designed to meet modern conservation and access needs.

The institution was created by decree under the early modern Greek state in 1832 as part of efforts to establish national cultural infrastructure after independence. Over time it absorbed private collections, expanded its services and adapted to changing publishing and information technologies while maintaining its role as a guardian of national memory.

As a national library it supports scholarship, education and cultural programming through exhibitions, loans and outreach. It collaborates with universities, museums and international partners to preserve endangered materials and promote research into Greek history, literature and the wider Mediterranean cultural heritage.
