Mutten (Mut) — former mountain municipality in Graubünden, Switzerland

Mutten stood above valley floors typical of the Albula region, with narrow lanes, traditional stone and timber houses and land used seasonally for grazing. Its location shaped daily life: access depended on mountain roads and footpaths, and the village retained a tranquil, rural atmosphere compared with lower-lying urban centres.

Historically Mutten was part of the mosaic of small settlements in Graubünden where Romansh or German could be spoken; the Romansh name, Mut, reflects this heritage. Economic life emphasised mixed farming, pastoralism and forestry, supplemented by small-scale tourism and services oriented to residents and visitors. Like other small mountain municipalities, Mutten faced challenges such as maintaining public services and infrastructure for a limited population, and balancing development with landscape conservation.

Merger and administration

As part of regional administrative consolidation, the former municipality of Mutten was merged into the larger municipality of Thusis on 1 January 2018. Such mergers are commonly used in Switzerland to streamline local administration, pool services and address demographic and economic pressures in sparsely populated mountain areas.
