Overview

Murtal is an administrative district in the central part of the Austrian state of Styria, within the country of Austria. The name means "Mur valley" and refers to the valley of the Mur River, which shapes much of the district's landscape and settlement pattern. Murtal functions as a mid-sized regional centre combining small towns, industry, farming and mountain foothills.

Geography and economy

The district covers valley floors, rolling hills and foothills of the Eastern Alps. Agriculture, forestry and light manufacturing form important parts of the local economy, alongside services and seasonal tourism. The area is known for mixed farmland, woodlands and outdoor recreation opportunities; it also benefits from transport links that connect central Styria with larger urban regions.

History and administration

Murtal was created on 1 January 2012 through the administrative merger of the former Judenburg and Knittelfeld districts. That change aimed to streamline local government and improve service delivery. Subsequent municipal reforms in Styria adjusted local municipal boundaries and responsibilities, but Murtal remains the recognised district-level unit for administration, planning and regional cooperation.

Municipal structure and notable places

The district contains a mix of market towns and municipalities. Major population and activity centres include:

  • Judenburg — a historical market town with medieval roots;
  • Knittelfeld — an industrial and commercial centre;
  • Spielberg (near Zeltweg) — internationally known for its motorsport circuit, the Red Bull Ring, which hosts major racing events;
  • Zeltweg — a town with aviation and event traditions.

Role and significance

As a district, Murtal performs administrative duties such as civil registration, building regulation oversight and coordination of regional services. It also promotes local economic development, tourism and cultural events.
