Mureș County (Romanian: Mureș; Hungarian: Maros) is an administrative region in central Romania, located in the historical province of Transylvania. Its seat and largest urban center is Târgu Mureș, a city with cultural institutions, university faculties and a notable Palace of Culture. The county takes its name from the Mureș River, which crosses the territory and has shaped settlement and transport patterns.
Geography and administration
The landscape combines river valleys, rolling hills and upland areas typical of central Transylvania. Agricultural land, forests and built-up areas coexist around small towns and market centers. Administratively the county includes municipalities, towns and communes that provide local governance; the county seat coordinates regional services, infrastructure and economic planning.
People, language and culture
Mureș is notable for ethnic and linguistic diversity. Romanians form the majority in many parts of the county, while a substantial Hungarian community maintains its language, traditions and schools. Roma and other groups contribute to a plural cultural fabric. This diversity is visible in bilingual signage in some localities, folk music and seasonal festivals celebrating both Romanian and Hungarian heritage.
History and notable places
The area has deep historical roots in Transylvania, with medieval towns, fortified churches and urban centers that evolved under varying political influences. Sighișoara, within the county, preserves a well-known citadel and is listed as a World Heritage site for its medieval architecture. Other towns and villages retain vernacular crafts and local museums that interpret regional history.
Economy and tourism
The county economy mixes agriculture, light industry, manufacturing and services. Some towns specialize in woodworking and musical instrument making, while others developed small-scale manufacturing. Spa tourism is important: resorts with mineral and salty lakes attract visitors seeking therapeutic treatments. Outdoor recreation, heritage tourism and cultural events are growing parts of the local economy.
