Geography and character

Muralto sits on the lakeshore and benefits from the mild climate of the Maggiore basin. The waterfront and promenades are a focal point for leisure and tourism, while inland streets host shops, cafés and apartment buildings. Although small in area, Muralto is an integral part of the lakeside settlement pattern that includes Locarno and other communities.

History and development

The municipality developed alongside regional growth in the 19th and 20th centuries, when tourism and improved transport encouraged urban expansion around Locarno.
