An association football pitch is the rectangular playing surface used in the sport commonly called football or soccer. Its layout and the meaning of its lines are specified by Law 1 of the Laws of the Game. Pitches occur on natural grass, hybrid systems or artificial turf and vary in exact size according to the competition and age group.

Layout and key markings

The field is bounded by the longer touchlines and the shorter goal lines. Central features include the halfway line and center circle, which mark the restart area after a goal and the kick-off point. Each end has a goal, a penalty area and a smaller goal area. Corner arcs are marked at each corner for corner kicks.

  • Goals: fixed on the goal line and centered; the standard senior goal is 8 yards wide and 8 feet high.
  • Penalty mark and area: set in front of each goal to designate penalty kicks and the goalkeeper’s restricted zone.
  • Center circle: used to keep opponents at the required distance on kick-offs.

Dimensions and variations

Pitch size is not identical at every level. Competitive and international fixtures typically use larger, more uniform dimensions, while recreational and youth pitches are smaller to suit age and skill. The Laws give ranges for length and width rather than a single fixed measurement.

Surfaces, construction and upkeep

Traditional natural grass remains common at elite levels, prized for ball behaviour and player comfort. Modern options include reinforced hybrid turf (natural grass with synthetic fibres) and full synthetic surfaces approved for play. Regular maintenance—mowing, irrigation, rolling and line marking—is essential for safety and performance.

History and significance

The defined pitch grew out of 19th-century codification of the game to standardize play between clubs. Clear markings and sizes help enforce rules, influence tactics and affect how the ball moves, making the pitch a central element of the sport.
