Mundaun was a former municipality located in the district of Surselva, within the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland. It no longer exists as an independent political entity following a sequence of municipal mergers in the 21st century.
Administrative history
The municipality of Mundaun was established through local reorganization and later consolidated into a larger commune. Key dates in its short administrative history include:
- On 1 January 2009 the communities of Flond and Surcuolm joined together to form the municipality known as Mundaun.
- On 1 January 2016 Mundaun merged with the neighbouring municipality of Obersaxen, creating the new municipality called Obersaxen Mundaun.
Setting and language
Mundaun was situated in the Surselva region of Graubünden, an Alpine area where both Romansh and German are commonly used. The territory that once made up the municipality is now administered as part of Obersaxen Mundaun.
Relevance
These types of mergers are part of a broader pattern in Switzerland aimed at improving administrative efficiency and local services by combining small municipalities into larger units. The name Mundaun continues to appear in regional references and in the official name of the present-day municipality formed in 2016.
