Overview

Mühledorf was a small rural municipality in the administrative district of Bern-Mittelland in the canton of Bern, Switzerland. Historically a village community centred on agriculture, it retained local institutions and a village identity until a municipal reorganisation at the start of 2018.

Location and geography

The settlement lies on the Swiss Plateau in a landscape of cultivated fields, meadows and small woodlands. The compact village core and surrounding farms are linked by local roads to neighbouring villages and regional centres. The immediate surroundings reflect the mixed farming traditions of the region.

Economy and infrastructure

Mühledorf's economy was typical of small Bernese municipalities: a mixture of farming, small local enterprises and residents commuting to work in nearby towns. Basic communal services and local road maintenance were organised at the municipal level prior to merger, while schools and specialised services were often shared with neighbouring communities.

Governance and merger

Like many small Swiss municipalities, Mühledorf considered cooperative arrangements to maintain services and administrative capacity. On 1 January 2018 the former municipalities of Gelterfingen, Mühledorf and Noflen merged to form the enlarged municipality of Kirchdorf. The merger aimed to improve efficiency, pool resources and ensure sustainable local services.

Culture and legacy

Local traditions, community events and place names continue to be important to residents. As a former municipality, Mühledorf's historical records, land registers and local heritage are now integrated into the administrative structure of Kirchdorf, while the village identity persists in everyday life.
