Geography and climate

The region is characterized by flat to gently undulating terrain crossed by the Chari and its tributaries. Soils and seasonal rains support woodland and savanna vegetation typical of the Sudanian climatic band. The climate has a marked wet season and a drier season, which governs agricultural cycles and river levels.

Administration and history

Moyen-Chari was created during national administrative reforms that reorganized provinces and prefectures into regions in the early 21st century. It is governed from Sarh and is divided for local administration into departments and sub-prefectures. These subdivisions manage education, health and local development programs under regional authority.

Economy and land use

The regional economy is largely rural and based on agriculture, livestock and fishing along rivers. Farmers grow staples such as millet, sorghum and maize and cultivate cotton as an important cash crop. Riverine fishing and small-scale trade in Sarh and market towns support local livelihoods, while road and regional air links connect the area to national markets.

Population and culture

Moyen-Chari is home to diverse ethnic groups of southern Chad, with the Sara peoples among the better-known communities. Local languages, customary authorities and seasonal festivals contribute to a rich cultural life. Sarh functions as the main cultural and commercial hub for the region.

Conservation and notable sites

The region contains protected areas such as Manda National Park, which preserves Sudanian savanna habitats and supports wildlife typical of southern Chad. Conservation efforts balance protection goals with the needs of communities that rely on natural resources. The Chari River corridor remains both an ecological lifeline and an economic asset for Moyen-Chari.
