Early life and beginnings

Grunwald was born in Odense on the Danish island of Funen. He trained as an actor and began working in theatre and film in the early 1960s. His first screen appearance came in 1961 and that same year he married actress Lily Weiding, a partnership that lasted throughout his life.

Film and screen career

On screen Grunwald balanced supporting and leading roles, but his popular breakthrough came with the Olsen Gang films, in which he played Benny Frandsen — the quick-witted partner to Egon Olsen. The series, known for its recurring comic heists and character-driven humour, secured Grunwald a lasting place in Danish cinema history. He also took roles outside the franchise, appearing in television dramas and feature films over several decades.

Theatre work and management

Beyond acting, Grunwald had a substantial career in theatre as a stage director and manager. He was active in Denmark's theatrical scene, directing productions and helping to steer institutions that brought both classic and contemporary plays to Danish audiences. His work behind the scenes complemented his public profile as a screen actor and contributed to developing performing arts locally.

Personal life, retirement and death

Grunwald's marriage to fellow actor Lily Weiding began in 1961 and endured until his death. He retired from public life in 2017 after a long and productive career. In October 2018 he announced a terminal diagnosis of thyroid cancer and died less than a month later on 14 November 2018 in Hellerup, aged 83. Contemporary reports described his illness and passing with respectful attention to his cultural contributions; further reading is available through general biographical sources such as profiles and regional references for his birthplace, Odense.

Legacy

Grunwald is remembered for combining comic timing with theatrical discipline. His role in the Olsen Gang films made him a household name in Denmark and beyond, while his commitment to theatre work helped sustain local institutions and train audiences. Discussions of his career often mention both his popular film persona and his quieter influence as a director and manager on Danish stage life.
