Geography and environment

The state’s landscape includes valleys, volcanic foothills and shorter mountain ranges that create a variety of microclimates. Soils and elevation support crops such as sugarcane, maize and flowers, while irrigated valleys have long sustained local agriculture. The relatively warm and mild weather around Cuernavaca has attracted residential development and tourism.

History and culture

Morelos takes its name from José María Morelos, a prominent leader in Mexico’s independence movement. Indigenous and colonial histories are visible in archaeological sites and historic towns. The region has a strong rural tradition and was influential during the Mexican Revolution; agrarian movements remain a notable part of its cultural memory.

Archaeological attractions and traditional festivals draw visitors. Sites such as hilltop temples and pre-Hispanic ruins, along with craft markets and pulque and culinary specialties, contribute to the state’s identity. Cuernavaca’s gardens and historic buildings are important cultural assets.

Economy and society

The Morelos economy mixes agriculture, light manufacturing, services and tourism. Proximity to Mexico City and other large urban areas has encouraged commuter and suburban growth, while small towns retain artisanal and agricultural livelihoods.
