Overview
Morehouse Parish is a civil parish in the northeastern region of the United States state of Louisiana. The parish seat and largest municipality is Bastrop. Morehouse was created in 1844 and, like other Louisiana subdivisions, uses the term parish in place of county. According to the 2010 census, the parish had a population of 27,979.
Geography and landscape
Located in north Louisiana, Morehouse Parish features a mix of fertile farmland, bottomlands and piney woods typical of the region. The terrain is generally flat to gently rolling, which has historically favored crop production and timber harvesting. The parish includes a combination of small towns, rural settlements and agricultural tracts rather than large urban centers.
History and development
Established in the mid-19th century, Morehouse Parish developed through agriculture and natural-resource use. Over time its economy expanded to include forestry, small-scale manufacturing and service industries supporting local communities. The parish’s towns grew around transportation routes, markets and milling or processing facilities that served surrounding farms and forests.
Economy and demographics
The parish economy has traditionally emphasized agriculture—row crops and livestock—and timber, supplemented by local manufacturing, retail and public services. Population density is low compared with Louisiana’s metropolitan areas; demographic change over recent decades reflects broader rural trends such as migration to larger cities and shifts in employment sectors.
Communities and culture
Bastrop serves as the administrative and cultural hub, hosting government offices, schools and local institutions. Elsewhere in the parish are multiple smaller towns and unincorporated communities that maintain local festivals, historical sites and outdoor recreation tied to hunting, fishing and timberlands. Local civic organizations and institutions preserve regional history and community life.
