Antônio Carlos Moreira Pires (8 July 1947 – 13 April 2020), widely known by his stage name Moraes Moreira, was a Brazilian singer, guitarist and songwriter. Born in Ituaçu in the state of Bahia, he rose to prominence in the early 1970s as a member of the influential group Os Novos Baianos before establishing a long solo career during which he released 29 albums.
Life and career
Moreira began his musical journey in Bahia and became nationally known while performing with Os Novos Baianos, a group that blended traditional Brazilian rhythms with contemporary influences. As a performer he contributed both vocals and guitar. After leaving the band he pursued a solo path that produced a steady output of recordings and performances, making him a recognizable figure in Brazilian popular music.
Across his solo work Moreira explored a variety of Brazilian styles and collaborated with many other artists. His discography is noted for its prolific span and for bringing regional sounds to wider audiences through studio albums and live shows.
Death
Moraes Moreira died on 13 April 2020 in Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Reports attributed his death to a heart attack; he was 72 years old.
