Montamy is a former administrative commune located in the Calvados department of northwestern France. Historically part of the region called Basse-Normandie, Montamy lay within the rural, hedgerow-covered landscape typical of the Normandy bocage. The settlement is identified in official records as a former commune and appears on departmental maps and registers of local places.

Geography and administration

Montamy occupies a small area characterized by rolling fields, mixed pasture and small parcels of woodland. It sits within Calvados, a department noted for agriculture, apple orchards and historic villages; administrative matters for the locality were handled at the departmental level of Calvados. The village lies in the northwest of the country and is part of the broader cultural and historical region of Normandy in northwestern France.

History and recent changes

Like many settlements in Normandy, Montamy developed around local farming and parish structures over many centuries. In the 21st century France has encouraged the consolidation of small communes to improve public services and governance. As part of this process, Montamy was merged on 1 January 2016 into the newly formed commune of Souleuvre-en-Bocage, transferring local administration and municipal services to the larger entity.

After the merger, Montamy ceased to exist as an independent municipal unit but remains a named village and locality within Souleuvre-en-Bocage. Day-to-day life and land use continue to reflect its rural character: traditional farmhouses, a village church or chapel, hedgerow landscapes and small-scale agriculture.

Significance and present day

Though small, Montamy exemplifies many Normandy hamlets in its architecture and land patterns and contributes to the region's agricultural economy and cultural heritage. The 2016 administrative changes also coincided with a wider territorial reorganization of French regions, which affected Basse-Normandie and its institutions.
