Overview

Monroe County is located in the southeastern portion of the state commonly identified with the Appalachian foothills. As reported in the 2010 U.S. census, the county had 14,642 residents. The county's administrative center and largest community is Woodsfield, which functions as the local seat of government and services. For official county information and maps see Ohio resources.

Geography and communities

The county landscape is largely hilly and forested, with the Ohio River forming part of its boundary and influencing local commerce and recreation. Settlement is dispersed among small villages, unincorporated communities and farms rather than large urban centers. Typical land uses include cropland, pasture, and woodlands, and the region supports outdoor activities such as fishing, hunting and river boating.

History and government

Organized in the early nineteenth century, the county takes its name from President James Monroe. Local government follows the common Ohio county model with elected commissioners, a sheriff, and other county officials who oversee services such as courts, public works and records. Historic buildings and small-town downtowns reflect the county's long rural heritage.

Economy and notable features

The economy is dominated by agriculture, small-scale manufacturing, retail services and public employment. Natural resources and the river corridor have supported modest energy and transportation activity at various times. Visitors and residents value the area for its low population density, scenic drives and access to the Ohio River.
