Mipham Chokyi Lodro (14th Shamarpa)

Role and characteristics

The Shamarpa is traditionally regarded as the second-ranking lineage holder of the Karma Kagyu, often working closely with the Karmapa. As Shamarpa, Mipham Chokyi Lodro was responsible for preserving ritual transmissions, supporting monastic communities, and instructing students in meditative and scholastic practice. He combined traditional training with outreach to international students, offering teachings in several countries and supporting Western centers.

Life and work

Born in 1952, he was identified and enthroned within the line of Shamarpa reincarnations and later took up responsibilities for teaching, administration, and the restoration of Karma Kagyu institutions affected by 20th-century upheavals. Over decades he gave retreats, public teachings, and led ceremonies. He produced commentaries, supported translations of Tibetan texts, and mentored a wide circle of students, from monastics to lay practitioners in Asia, Europe, and the Americas.
