History

Founded and named for John Milledge, the town was selected as Georgia's state capital in the early 19th century and served in that role from 1804 until the post–Civil War period. Milledgeville was occupied by Union forces in 1864, an event that altered its political role; the capital was later moved. Many public buildings and private homes from the antebellum era remain, and a number of sites are preserved for their historical value.
