Michel Hidalgo (22 March 1933 – 26 March 2020) was a French football player and manager best known for guiding the France national team between 1976 and 1984. As coach he oversaw the team that finished fourth at the 1982 FIFA World Cup and won UEFA Euro 1984. Born in Leffrinckoucke, Hidalgo combined a modest playing career with a lasting influence on French coaching and player development.
Playing career
Hidalgo played as a midfielder and spent his professional years with several French clubs. His club career included spells at Le Havre, Stade de Reims and AS Monaco. While at Reims he took part in continental competition and is credited with scoring in the 1956 European Cup Final. He earned a single cap for the France national side in 1962.
Managerial achievements
Appointed national coach in 1976, Hidalgo rebuilt France around technical, attacking football. Under his direction the side developed a core of creative midfielders and forwards that produced strong international performances. The highlight of his tenure was winning the European Championship on home soil in 1984, a triumph that established France as a leading team of the era.
Style, influence and legacy
Hidalgo favoured possession-based, attacking play and promoted young talent.
