History and municipal development

Mendrisio's contemporary municipal boundaries are the result of several mergers. In 2004 the former municipality of Salorino was incorporated. A larger consolidation took place on 5 April 2009 with the inclusion of the former municipalities of Arzo, Capolago, Genestrerio, Rancate and Tremona. On 14 April 2013 the former municipalities of Besazio, Ligornetto and Meride merged into Mendrisio, extending its territory and bringing important natural and cultural sites into the municipality.

Geography and notable sites

Part of Mendrisio's terrain reaches the foothills above Lake Lugano and includes access points to local mountains. The village of Capolago lies at the lake’s edge and is the base for excursions to nearby peaks such as Monte Generoso. The 2013 merger with Meride added territory close to Monte San Giorgio, a UNESCO-listed fossil site noted for its exceptional paleontological finds.

Culture, education and economy

Mendrisio hosts the Accademia di Architettura of the Università della Svizzera italiana, attracting students and visiting architects and contributing to the town’s contemporary cultural life. The historic centre contains churches, old arcades and civic buildings that reflect the region’s long human habitation. The local economy is mixed: small industry and services coexist with agriculture and tourism. The town is also known for a large outlet shopping area which draws visitors from the region.

Transport and access

Mendrisio benefits from good road and rail links to nearby urban centres such as Lugano and Chiasso and to border crossings into Italy. Rail and bus services make it a practical base for day trips into the surrounding mountains, lakes and fossil sites.
