For much of its recent history Capolago functioned as a small parish and commercial centre oriented toward lake and mountain traffic. As part of a regional municipal reorganisation, on 5 April 2009 the former communes of Arzo, Genestrerio, Mendrisio, Rancate and Tremona were merged with Capolago to form a larger municipality under the name Mendrisio. Since that date Capolago has been administered as a locality or quarter within the expanded municipality.
Geography and transport
Capolago occupies a narrow strip of shore where the lake meets rising ground. Its waterfront and small harbour link it to regular boat services on Lake Lugano and to leisure navigation. The village is also the lower terminus of the scenic rack railway that climbs Monte Generoso, a popular excursion route offering panoramic views of the lake and surrounding Alps.
