Megapode: the mound-building incubator birds

Megapodes are a family of ground-dwelling birds that incubate eggs with environmental heat. Known as mound-builders, they occur across Australasia and the Pacific and show unique reproductive and behavioral adaptations.

Overview

Megapodes (family Megapodiidae), commonly called incubator birds or mound-builders, are a distinctive group of ground-dwelling galliform birds. They combine a stocky, chicken-like build with unusually large feet and feet-adapted claws that help them dig and manipulate nesting material. The name megapode derives from Greek roots meaning "large foot." These birds are best known for relying on external heat sources rather than body warmth to incubate their eggs.

Physical characteristics and behavior

Megapodes are generally medium to large, with compact bodies, small heads and strong legs. Their heavy feet and claws are adapted for scratching, excavating and constructing nests. Most species are shy and terrestrial, feeding on a variety of invertebrates, seeds and fallen fruit. They can move quickly on the ground and many are capable of short flights, but they do not habitually roost high in trees.

Reproduction and incubation

What sets megapodes apart is their incubation strategy. Instead of brooding eggs with metabolic heat, birds use environmental warmth: decaying vegetation, warm soil, sun-warmed sand or geothermal heat. Many species build large mounds of leaf litter and soil that produce heat as organic matter decomposes. Others bury eggs in beaches, riverbanks or volcanic soils. Adults — often the males — maintain nest temperature by adding or removing material and by monitoring heat.

Hatchlings and life history

Megapode chicks are extremely precocial: they hatch well feathered, with developed legs and flight feathers, and are able to run, forage and fly soon after emerging. Parents do not feed or brood the young; instead the hatchlings fend for themselves. Eggs tend to be large relative to adult size, which helps provide energy reserves for the self-sufficient chicks.

Megapodes occur across Australia, New Guinea, Indonesia, the Philippines and many Pacific islands. Well-known examples include the malleefowl, brush-turkeys, the maleo and several Megapodius species. Some species use vegetation mounds for incubation while others prefer sand or geothermal sites. Their varied nesting methods are often tailored to local climate and habitat.

Many megapode populations face pressures from habitat loss, introduced predators and egg harvesting by humans. Conservation measures include habitat protection, predator control and nest-guarding programs.
