Early life and beginnings

Millar was born in Doncaster in the West Riding of Yorkshire. She began performing as a teenager and made her first television appearance in 1953 at the age of 17 in a programme titled Those Were the Days. Early stage engagements helped establish her as a versatile performer able to handle comedy, songs and supporting dramatic parts.

Stage and screen career

On stage Millar appeared in musicals and plays, including roles such as Cloris in Lock Up Your Daughters (1962) and the title role in a production of Ann Veronica (1969). Her West End work demonstrated a strong singing voice and an aptitude for timing and characterisation that translated naturally to television. In addition to sitcom work, she made numerous guest appearances and took part in variety shows and stage tours.

Notable television work

While she had a steady television presence from the 1950s onward, Millar achieved lasting popular recognition through Keeping Up Appearances, in which her character Rose provided a foil to Hyacinth's pretensions with extravagant anecdotes and theatrical flair. That role remains the most widely cited example of her work in British television comedy.

Personal life, death and legacy

Millar died of ovarian cancer in Brockley, south London, on 10 November 1998, aged 62. She is remembered for bringing warmth and comic timing to both small and large roles, and for a career that bridged musical theatre and television comedy.
