Role in the 1982 conflict

Following Argentina's April 1982 landing on the islands, Menéndez was installed as the de facto Governor of the Falkland Islands and commander of the Argentine garrison. He led the local military administration from 3 April until the end of organized Argentine resistance on 14 June 1982. During the British military campaign to retake the islands, Menéndez ultimately surrendered to British forces, an act that marked the effective end of the war on the islands.
