María Ignacia Benítez (1958–2019), Chilean Minister of the Environment

Role and responsibilities

As Minister of the Environment, Benítez led the cabinet-level agency that coordinates national environmental policy, enforces standards and administers instruments such as environmental impact assessment (EIA) processes, protected area designation and air and water quality norms. Her tenure coincided with growing public attention to issues such as mining impacts, urban air pollution, water rights and coastal management.

During the early 2010s Chile faced intensified discussion about balancing economic development—particularly mining and energy projects—with conservation and community health. The Ministry under Benítez focused on implementing institutional frameworks, strengthening inspection and permitting procedures, and engaging with regional authorities and stakeholders.
