Administrative divisions and towns

The district is divided into several tehsils and local administrative units. Major subdivisions include Mansehra Tehsil and Oghi Tehsil, and historically the area known as Kala Dhaka (Torghar) has been treated as a distinct tribal territory; it has since acquired a separate administrative status. Geography and transport

Mansehra District sits at the junction of lower Himalayan foothills and the higher ranges that lead to Pakistan’s northern areas. Two major corridors run through or begin in the district: the historic Karakoram Highway (KKH), which links northern Pakistan with China, and the road that climbs from Mansehra to the Kaghan Valley and on toward the Babusar Pass. The Mansehra–Naran–Babusar route is an important seasonal artery for tourism and local trade, reaching up to Babusar Pass at the high point of the road network.

The local economy combines agriculture, forestry, small-scale industry and services. Mansehra town is a market and service hub for the surrounding rural communities. Tourism is a significant seasonal activity: visitors use Mansehra as a staging point for the Kaghan and Naran valleys, lakes and trekking routes. Road and transport improvements aim to reduce travel times to the northern mountain destinations and to provide alternatives to longer routes into the highlands.

The Mansehra area has long been a crossroads between the plains and the mountains, with cultural and historical ties to broader Hazara and Peshawar regions. In recent decades the district received international attention after the 2005 Kashmir earthquake, which caused widespread damage across parts of Mansehra and neighbouring districts; recovery and rebuilding have shaped local development. Today Mansehra combines administrative functions, transit importance and a role as a service centre for mountain tourism and regional trade.
