Administrative structure and functions

An arrondissement is administered from a chief town whose official is the subprefect; when the department's prefecture is located within that arrondissement the prefect also serves as its chief administrative authority. The capital of an arrondissement is therefore called a subprefecture, except when it is also the department's prefecture.
