Overview

Malapalud was a small municipality situated in the district of Echallens in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland. On 1 January 2009 the municipality was incorporated into the neighbouring municipality of Assens. After the merger, Malapalud ceased to exist as an independent administrative unit and became a locality within Assens.

Geography and character

Located on the fertile Gros-de-Vaud plateau that dominates much of central Vaud, Malapalud exemplified the small rural settlements common to the region. The landscape around the village is principally agricultural, with fields, farmsteads and a modest local road network connecting it to nearby towns and the district centre of Echallens.

History and administrative change

Like many small Swiss municipalities, Malapalud had centuries of local history as a farming community. In the early 21st century a wave of municipal consolidations in the canton encouraged smaller communes to merge with neighbours for economic and administrative efficiency. The formal merger into Assens on 1 January 2009 is part of these wider reforms.

Today and legacy

Today Malapalud is treated as a locality or hamlet within the administration of Assens. Local place names, cadastral references and community memory preserve its identity even though municipal services and governance are handled by the larger commune. Historical records and administrative documents for the former municipality are typically held at cantonal archives or with the new municipal office.
