A main line is the principal railway route within a rail network, serving long-distance passenger and freight traffic with higher capacity, priority, and infrastructure than branch or secondary lines.

A main line is the principal route in a railway network that links major cities, ports, industrial regions or other high-demand destinations. Often called a "mainline" in some countries, it differs from branches and secondary lines by carrying the bulk of long-distance passenger services and heavy freight movements.

Characteristics

Main lines are typically designed for higher speeds, greater axle loads and more frequent service. They commonly have features such as double or multiple tracks, continuous signaling, electrification, grade separation at busy junctions and carefully maintained track geometry to support reliability and safety.

History and development

The concept of a main trunk route developed alongside early railway networks in the 19th century as cities and industrial centers required reliable, high-capacity links. Over time main lines have been upgraded with stronger rails, improved signaling and, where justified, electrification or dedicated high-speed alignments to increase throughput and reduce travel time.

Uses and operational importance

Main lines carry a mix of services: intercity and regional passenger trains, long-distance freight, and sometimes commuter services. Because of their strategic role, main lines receive operational priority, intensive maintenance regimes and planning for capacity improvements such as additional tracks, passing loops and modern traffic management systems.

Distinctions and variants

  • Branch line: a secondary route serving local traffic and feeders to the main line.
  • Trunk line: synonym often used where a single corridor serves national or international long-distance traffic.
  • High-speed line: a specialized main line built for sustained very high speeds, usually with stricter alignment and signaling standards.

Operational considerations

Managing a main line involves balancing mixed traffic, scheduling limited capacity, and minimizing disruptions from maintenance or incidents. Investments focus on signaling upgrades, electrification, grade separation and freight capacity to keep the corridor competitive and resilient.
