Overview

Mailsi Tehsil is an administrative subdivision of Vehari District in the southern part of the Punjab province of Pakistan. The tehsil combines an urban centre, the town of Mailsi, with surrounding rural areas and villages. It is an important local hub for administration, commerce and farming in the district.

Administration and subdivisions

The tehsil is divided into 31 union councils, a basic unit of local government in Pakistan. Two of these union councils together form the tehsil capital, Mailsi. Local governance responsibilities include municipal services, small-scale infrastructure, and coordination of basic health and education services under the tehsil municipal administration and district authorities.

  • 31 union councils in total
  • Tehsil capital formed by two union councils
  • Part of Vehari District administrative structure

Geography, economy and land use

Mailsi lies within Punjab’s agricultural plain. Irrigation and canal systems that serve much of the province support local farming. The economy is largely agrarian, with farmers and related trades forming a substantial share of employment. Common regional crops include wheat, cotton and sugarcane, and local markets handle agricultural produce and inputs.

Society, services and transport

The tehsil combines town and village life: Mailsi town provides markets, basic health clinics, schools and government offices that serve surrounding communities. Road links connect the tehsil to other parts of Vehari District and neighbouring districts, enabling trade and access to higher-level services. Local social life centres on bazaars, neighbourhood institutions and community events.

History and notable facts

Mailsi has developed as a rural-administrative centre within Punjab’s long-established patterns of irrigation agriculture and settlement. Its role as a tehsil headquarters makes it a focal point for local governance and rural development projects. Though mostly agricultural, the tehsil’s towns are important for trade, services and access to education and health for nearby villages.
