Louis Antoine de Pardaillan de Gondrin (5 September 1664 – 2 November 1736) was a French nobleman and senior court official whose career bridged the late reign of Louis XIV and the early 18th century. He inherited family marquisates and was created 1st Duke of Antin in 1711. He combined aristocratic rank with important administrative responsibilities at the royal court, notably in charge of the royal building works and artistic commissions.
Early life and family
Born into the Pardaillan de Gondrin family, an established provincial nobility with connections at Versailles, he benefited from his lineage and court presence to obtain offices and honours. His elevation to a dukedom in 1711 marked the peak of his formal rank within the peerage of France.
Administration of the Bâtiments du Roi
Antin is best known for his role supervising the Bâtiments du Roi, the royal department responsible for construction, maintenance and the commissioning of painting, sculpture and decorative arts for the king's residences. In this capacity he managed workshops, supervised contracts with architects and craftsmen, and oversaw works at major royal sites, including projects associated with Versailles and other princely residences. His tenure required balancing artistic patronage with practical concerns of budgeting, procurement and preservation of royal property.
Patronage and collecting
As a patron and collector he influenced court taste through commissions and acquisitions. He supported painters, sculptors and decorative artists of his day and assembled a personal collection of paintings and antiquities that reflected contemporary interest in classical models and portraiture. His activity as a collector and administrator helped sustain institutions that employed artists and artisans in the transition after Louis XIV's death.
Portraiture and public image
Antin's status is epitomized by his grand portrait by Hyacinthe Rigaud, a leading portraitist of the period. Such state portraits emphasized rank, costume and the trappings of office and served to project authority and cultivated taste. The Rigaud portrait remains a visual document of Antin's social and political position.

Through his management of the Bâtiments du Roi and his patronage he played a part in shaping the presentation and preservation of France's royal artistic heritage in the early 18th century.
