Loudness: perception, measurement and common levels

Loudness refers to how strong or intense a sound appears to a listener. It is a perceptual attribute, meaning it depends on both the physical properties of sound waves and the human ear and brain that interpret them. Everyday controls labeled "volume" — for example a computer volume control or a television volume control — adjust the signal level to change perceived loudness.
Physically, loudness is related to sound pressure and sound intensity, which are commonly expressed using the decibel (dB) scale. The decibel scale is logarithmic: an increase of about 10 dB is typically perceived as roughly twice as loud by a human listener. Because dB values are relative, measurements are stated with reference to a baseline pressure or power, and different weighting curves are often applied to approximate human hearing.
Measurement and weighting
Measurements of loudness in real-world settings usually use sound level meters and electronic analyzers. Instruments designed for general environmental use report sound pressure level with specific weighting filters, most commonly A-weighting (written dB(A)), which reduces the contribution of very low and very high frequencies to mimic human sensitivity. When precision is required for perceived loudness rather than simple pressure, engineers may use loudness metrics and models that incorporate frequency and duration.
Typical sound levels
- 30 dB — quiet rural area or whisper.
- 60 dB — normal conversation at close range.
- 80–85 dB — heavy city traffic or noisy restaurant; prolonged exposure can be harmful.
- 100–110 dB — motorcycle or loud live music; short exposure recommended.
- 120–130 dB — very loud events, sirens, or aircraft at close range; risk of immediate pain and hearing damage.
Instruments that report loudness and levels are often called sound level meters or decibel meters; these devices can be handheld or installed permanently for monitoring and regulation.
