Geography

The county’s terrain is typical of the Eastern Kentucky coalfield: rugged hills, mixed hardwood forests and small streams. The topography limits large-scale agriculture and influences road routes and community locations. Local waterways and forested areas provide habitat for wildlife and opportunities for outdoor recreation such as hiking, hunting and fishing.

History

Established in the mid-19th century and named for Robert P. Letcher, the county developed slowly until the expansion of coal mining in the late 19th and 20th centuries. Coal brought jobs, population growth and accompanying infrastructure; its decline in the late 20th and early 21st centuries produced economic and demographic adjustments common across central Appalachia.

Economy and services

Historically dominated by coal and timber, the local economy has diversified to include public services, education, health care and small businesses. Community priorities include mine reclamation, improving road infrastructure and expanding broadband to serve dispersed rural populations.

Letcher County is part of a broader Appalachian cultural region known for traditional music, crafts and community festivals. Whitesburg hosts arts organizations and cultural programs that support regional storytelling, film and music, and attract visitors interested in Appalachian heritage.
